Storytelling to help your organization rise
above the crowd.
Story is everything.
From my three years as editor of my high school newspaper through my three decades as an award-winning journalist and nonprofit communications professional, I’ve been passionate about telling stories. I love crafting stories about real people doing amazing things or helping others to achieve their best.
I can take a complicated topic and present it in a meaningful way that will help people understand your organization and what you offer. I also can help you discover outlets for your stories and ways to distribute them.
Facts and figures won’t move your audience to act, especially if you’re a nonprofit trying to raise awareness about your mission or persuade donors to give generously. People connect emotionally to other people.
That’s why clear, succinct storytelling is at the forefront of everything I do at Sunflower Communications. Articles, newsletters, annual reports, social media posts, media pitches, strategic communication plans — they’re all about sharing stories.

Kind Words from Clients

"Sonja is a talented professional who has a gift when it comes to crafting a message that highlights the impact a nonprofit has on the community.
She began by asking the questions that really helped our team focus on the goals of our communication. After talking with both staff and families who have benefited from Edmarc services, Sonja created a powerful message that resulted in multiple stories within the media. I would highly recommend Sonja to help you share your story and reach your goals.”
— Mary Helen Hilton, Director of Development, Edmarc

"After bringing Sonja on board as our webpage copywriter, our business blossomed.
Sonja studied our business and interviewed us to get a feel for the projection we wanted for our company. She brings an experience to the team that is worth every penny. She is very flexible with our busy schedules and always meets deadlines.”
— Patrick & Michelle Melchior, founders, Leather By Dragonfly

"How do you measure happiness and freedom from stress? It's been such a relief to work with Sonja.
I use my time on the activities that have the greatest impact on my business, like one-on-one client meetings, while I delegate the content and social media to Sonja. I have more potential clients now than I’ve ever had in the six years since I started my business.
Hire Sonja now. 100% I would hire her again. The end result of our project has been beyond what I expected. I love what Sonja’s created for my company, and I’ve seen measurable results and positive outcomes.”

Why Sunflower Communications?
Sunflowers are joyful, strong and reach for the sun. They’re also tall, like me (just under 6 feet, if you’re counting), so they naturally stand above the crowd. And there’s a variety of sunflower called “Sonja” that produces plentiful, big golden-orange blooms. That makes my gardener’s heart happy.
